Former Kaichi School
The Former Kaichi School is Japan’s oldest elementary school, and was used between the Meiji (1868 - 1912) and the Showa periods (1926 - 1989). The school is built in an structure that mixes Japanese and western architectural styles, and is a representative work of Meiji period architecture. Today, the school is used as a museum that exhibits textbooks and school supplies used from the Edo period (1603 – 1867) up until today. In 1971, the Former Kaichi School was registered as an important cultural property.
