Ota Former Residence

Ota Former Residence
The Ota Former Residence was originally owned by the Nakamura Family in the 1600s. In 1659, Nakamura Kichibei began the production and sales of Houmeishu (保命酒), a herbal liquor, in his home in Tomonoura. His liquor business was a huge hit, and later named his house and shop "Houmeishu-ya". Tomonoura's economy became greatly dependent on Houmeishu, but the business came to end along in the late Edo period. The Otas, a family in the cargo vessel industry, took over the house, and the house retains their name to this day.
